Description
There are four stone tablets in a small field behind the Singapore merlion statue. The inscription tells the story of the Merlion symbolizing Singapore, and a small Merlion statue is built nearby to accompany it. At night, when you board the Merlion statue and look down at the harbour, the shadow of the ship is hazy, and thousands of lights are flickering. The Singapore merlion statue standing on the top of the waves quickly became a symbol of Singapore. The lion head of the Merlion represents a magical beast that was recorded in the “Malay Chronicle” and was seen in the island in the 11th century by Prince San Niro Utama of the Sanfoqi Kingdom. Know it’s a lion. In this regard, the prince named the island “Singapura”. “Singapura” in Sanskrit means lion (Singa) city (pura). The fish tail of the Singapore merlion statue symbolizes the ancient city of Temasek before the prince discovered the island, and represents the development of Singapore from a small fishing village.
The design of merlion Statue is inspired by a legend about Singapore’s history. According to the Malay Chronicle, in the 11th century AD, a prince from Sampho Chi named St Nero Udama came to Singapore on his way to Malacca. As soon as he landed, he saw a wonderful beast. His attendants told him it was a lion. He named it Singapura (Singapura, meaning “Lion City” in Sanskrit). Singapore merlion statue is a fish tail because Singapore is an island and everything about it is closely related to the sea. Fish represent the country’s past, when Singapore was just a fishing village, a sea town. The lion has a double meaning. It stands for the original name of Singapore, meaning Lion City and Singapore Merlion Statue. It also symbolizes the power of Singapore in today’s world economy.
